Some artists paint landscapes, others paint portraits, and I paint flowers. Why? In the words of Claude Monet, “I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.”
Flowers rejuvenate and revitalize me, evoking many of my fondest childhood memories. Images of growing up in Jamaica where the gardens my mother lovingly created and tended were my private playground. I am endlessly intrigued by the distinctiveness of each flower, the delicate forms and depth of colour intensity. That’s the essence of what I try to express in my paintings. As for my artistic process, I allow my love of colour to guide my intentions. Painting the flowers up close in a realistic style, enables me to highlight the detailed nuances and capture the individual beauty of each flower. I work in Acrylic, carefully building up layers to get the depth of colour that characterizes my artwork. Armed with my camera, I am constantly searching both here in Toronto and on my travels abroad for flowers to photograph and later paint. I am happiest when surrounded by flowers which, living in Toronto, is not possible all year round; except, of course, in my studio where they are in abundance. I hope viewers get as much pleasure from my paintings as I get from creating them. |
