I have always been drawn to bold colour and how the light plays with what I see, so my passion for glass is not surprising.
The first colours I encountered as a child were definite and definitely not pastel; they were the colours of the family farm. Black and white Holstein cows. The green and yellow of cornfields and John Deere tractors. The red brick farmhouse, framed in deep purple irises. Blue skies and blue jeans and weirdly blue salt licks. The variegated browns of wet and drying mud mixed with all kinds of straw and manure. Filtered light in shadows nuanced by gaps in the barn-board walls of the haymow. Natural art enhanced by the cracks. The chorus of Leonard Cohen’s Anthem has become the mindful lens through which I view life. “Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” I strive to celebrate the everyday cracks. |
